One of the most unique equipment ideas that made its appearance at OWU was the flip-up fins.  This new design has a hinged fin blade (spring operated) fixed to a standard fin shoe.  In the up position, the fin blade rest in fron of the diver's shin.  Once in the water, a swift, strong kick clicks the blade in the swimming position.  When the blade is needed in the up postion, the heel of the opposite foot can trigger the latch and the blade pops up.  This fin concept has tremendous potential: getting in and out of pools, on and off of boats, and walking to and from shore entry points.  Outside of diving, these fins could provide shin protection for soccer and field hockey.  I like this idea but I would like to see how it matures over the next couple of years before I invest a few hundred dollars in a pair of new fins.

Yes, I would actually like to hear a report from someone who has dived with them before I would spend the money.  I'll let someone else do the field testing!  ;)

This is the first I have heard of them but they do not sound interesting at all to me.

It’s an interesting idea.  I'm curious to see how the manufacturer engineered the hinge.    Moving parts on things that I don't always carry spares of make me uneasy.

I have used them...We have had them in our store for a few months allowing customers to try them.  They will be available for DEMO this weekend during the Whites Demo Days....Also, Starting Mothers Day, we are at Haigh diving EVERY Sunday and they are available for anyone to try....

They really do work great!!  I used them on a shark Dive we did at the Mall of America, and During an Ice Diving class an Instructor used them.   Even while cutting the hole in the Ice!!...pics are in our photo gallery

Seeing them at DEMA I thought they would be a gimmick, but I promise, and you will see when you try them...they really are functional and an excellent, fast, easy kicking fin!!

I got a look at some of these the other day.  Look's like I'll have to try a pair out.  They look well done.

I have a set of prototypes and have used them a couple times.  Takes a little getting used to.  To open and start using is simple...just start kicking.  Having them flip back can be a little tricky.  I'm still getting used to that.

One thing I do not like about them is the stiffness.  I usually dive using splits.  The Omega's are much harder to kick with.  I have been in contact with the developer and they are in the process of developing a set of splits.  Hopefully will have a set this week to try out.

For more information on the fins, check out their site http://www.omegaaquatics.com/index.html

I'm still not sure how I feel about these, but I am pretty sure I don't like them. They seem too difficult to use and they are really hard to snap down in fin position. I'm not sure I would want to be under and them accidentally snapping up on me.

So far I like mine.  Just wish they were splits.  Much easier on the knees.

As for getting into fin position, just start kicking.  They snap right into place.  My trouble is folding them back up.  On mine, the spring seems a little weak and I can never tell if I kicked the release properly.  Just takes practice I guess.

Looks like a solution to a non-problem.
